Description

The Mining Remediation Authority (MRA) has identified the need to construct a mine water monitoring borehole at Brodsworth, Yorkshire. Brodsworth Main Colliery lies within the Barnlsey-Manvers-Grimethorpe sub-block of the South Yorkshire Coalfield, the borehole is to intersect mine workings understood to be flooded with the intention of monitoring mine water levels and chemistry.

The borehole is to be drilled into a roadway in the Barnsley Seam and expected to meet the key requirements set out below.

This initiative aims to enhance the understanding of mine water behaviour in the region and to inform future management strategies.

Key Requirements

The Contractor will be responsible for specific construction details to achieve the borehole requirements, as specified below

Operational time: By March 2026

Methodology: To be selected by the contractor to meet the target requirements

Borehole depth: Estimated 538 - 560metres below ground level (m bgl)

Final internal diameter: Minimum of 100mm

Borehole deviation: 2m from surface location (0.6 from vertical)

Design life: Minimum of 20 years

Headwork: To be completed under a square split lockable manhole cover at surface, minimum of 1000mm x 1000mm with D400 rating.

Minimum of 200mm between base of cover and top of casing. Chamber must be between 0.5 and 1.0 m total depth.

Permits / Land Agreements

The location for the Borehole is identified in a We are in the process of agreeing Head of terms and licence with Land trust to progress with Borehole works. The licence will be formally signed and available prior to site mobilisation in October 2025

Works will be completed under Permitted Development.

Engagement

Engagement deadline

1 August 2025

Engagement process description

The Mining Remediation Authority (MRA) are continuously seeking ways to improve our projects. In the past our delivery partners have drilled a piolet hole first using wireline coring system to maintain the verticality.

A significant risk is the potential for the roadway to differ from expectations, which could lead to missing the intended target. However, this method offers the flexibility to re-drill to an alternative target at minimal additional cost.

We would greatly value your feedback on this proposed approach or a suitable approach to minimise risk and cost of Drilling BH.
