The Manchester Ship Canal is a 36-mile-long inland waterway in the North West of England linking Manchester to the Irish Sea. The Manchester Ship Canal Company operate four ship-handling tugs on the canal and wish to research the market for replacing these vessels.

two.2.4) Description of the procurement

Ship handling tugs for use on the Manchester Ship Canal have the following broad specification.

• Conventional twin-screw ship handling tug

• Capable of towing over the stern as a conventional tug

• Capable of towing over the bow as a braking tug (made fast to the assisted vessel’s stern)

• Beam overall not to exceed 8.15m

• Draught not to exceed 3.6m

• Bollard pull astern 18-20 tonnes

• Bollard pull ahead at least 25 tonnes

• Free running speed at least 10.5 knots

• Accommodation for a crew of three (in separate cabins), including galley, messroom and wash-place

• Built to Class rules and classed with a recognised Classification Society

• Coded under the Workboat code for minimum Category 3, 20 miles from safe haven
