Arts Council granted funded projected consisting of conservation work on listed pump house chimney, entrance porch and boundary wall which are part of Papplewick Pumping Station which is a scheduled monument and grade II listed Park and Garden. Museum will remain operational during works.

two.2.4) Description of the procurement

The boundary wall is approximately 70m in length, 22.5 inches thick and its height varies but is generally approximately 1.6m high.

The wall is of brick construction and sits on a rough finished masonry plinth, It has inset panels with a red brick moulded course beneath a sandstone coping.

The boiler chimney is square in plan and largely built in red brick. It has a decorative central and corner pilasters. The internal corners of which have moulded bricks, probably hand gauged. It is approximately 120ft in height from ground level and has a plan area of 4.1m x 4.1m at the base reducing to 3.66m x 3.66m at the main pilastered shaft.

The top of the chimney is formed of blue engineering bricks, and topped with a concrete cap. There are four decorative brick and stone turrets surrounding the flue, which have a lead cap. At high level beneath the turrets, there is a large stone dentilled cornice with moulded brick corbels beneath, which overhang a triple lancet stone decoration. To the centre the sandstone columns are formed in three pieces including a shaft with decorative capital and base. There are red sandstone voussoirs forming arches between. Moulded terracotta bricks infill the three lancet openings on each side.

In plan the porch is approximately 2.2m deep x 4.1m width, with the base of the steps protruding another 2.5m from the front of the porch.

The porch structure has a slated mansard roof formed by timber rafters, supported on a central timber purlins to each pitch and onto eaves beams spanning the north and south side, and stubs to the front. The eaves beams area supported by 10nr. timber posts, which bear onto a raised concrete plinth. The 2no. corner posts to the south east and north east corner are fairly plain, whereas the other 8 (3no on the north and south elevation and 2 no on the east elevation) are decorative in a mock Jacobean form.

There is brick infill between the wooden posts to midlevel with a decorative wooden handrail connecting the posts at the top of the brickwork. Above this the panelled elevations are pierced between the decorative timberwork.

The east elevation is formed with a timber arch springing from the inner posts on each side. There are decorative terracotta ridge tiles and finials to the roof. The covering is slate with lead flashing at the wall junction and at the change in pitch on the roof.
