Single supplier - intellectual property or exclusive rights

The hardware fitted across the 260 units is specific to the OEM. While NTL will still need to maintain and replace aspects of the hardware, the largest proportion of ongoing costs with the supplier is for the back-office and hosting support, which is bespoke to the OEM due to intellectual property rights (IPR).

Northern does not have the ability to replace hardware across 260+ trains due to the cost and disruption to passenger service, noting that the original fitment plan took 5 years from start to present day, and some trains are still not yet

completed particularly noting that NTL is underway with a new trains procurement which will see these assets being removed from service at some point beyond 2030.
