The process will follow the innovation partnership procedure & is intended to encourage innovative businesses to help United Utilities tackle key efficiency, safety & customer challenges in innovative ways.

Successful applicants will be co-located (where possible, & subject to Covid and travel restrictions) & work closely with UU to test, develop, improve & demonstrate their product/service in live customer environments. Leading to opportunities for contractual relationships for further ongoing testing &/or roll-out.

The Company offers project managers & resources to design & run the best trial conditions for the best ideas – either a 12-week testing programme or different trial design. Each trial will accelerate & improve the chance for large-scale roll-out.

This procurement will follow the Innovation Partnership procedure and will seek innovative businesses to help UU tackle key industry challenges in innovative ways.

United Utilities want to tackle our key business challenges so we can provide better, more cost effective services for customers. That means building relationships with businesses who share our vision, ambition and appetite for innovation.

The Innovation Lab 4 programme will be run in collaboration with corporate innovation specialist L Marks and successful applicants will be mentored by senior United Utilities business leaders and get access to test and demonstrate your product/service in live customer environments. Businesses will be invited to put forward proposals in the following key areas:

• Systems Thinking,

• Low carbon and Natural Solutions,

• Digitising the water & wastewater network

• Customer Service Excellence

• Wild Card.

There will be three stages of down selection.

At application stage, candidates will only pass through to the ideas stage if they are of good standing.

At Ideas stage, the top 25 highest scoring applicants will pass through to Pitch Day (providing their score is 40 % or above).

Following Pitch Day, responses will be assessed and up to eight applicants will be awarded a place in the Innovation Lab (providing their score is 75 % or above). The scoring criteria is included in the accompanying documentation.

At both ideas stage and pitch day, applicants can be rejected if their idea has no innovative aspects to it, is not likely to be of benefit or relevance to UU or it would not be possible to develop the idea substantially during the time available in the lab.

The purpose of the lab is to co-create to enter into a supply agreement (minimum). In order to pass through to the ideas stage, applicants must confirm in their application that they are willing to enter into a supply agreement.

UU may specify certain requirements as to the legal form of lab participants, for example successful economic operators may be required to form a limited company and/or to transfer their business (including any relevant intellectual property rights) into the limited company prior to entry into the lab.

six.1) Information about recurrence

UU will be working with L Marks in the delivery of this procurement process. Documents including a step-by-step guide and how to use the portal have been included within the documents folder and more information can be found on the website at www.unitedutilities.com/innovation

Following the completion of the innovation lab, UU may enter into a supply agreement with one or more participants. The maximum price will be set at no more than demonstrable and approved costs + 50 % margin. Alternatively, UU may take a license to manufacture from one or more participants. Final versions of the contract terms will be provided prior to pitch day. Drafts are made available at the applications stage for information, along with a draft procurement document for the ideas stage.

UU will not pay candidates for lab participation alone, but will provide a fixed maximum level of participation support in consideration for which participants will be expected to carry out the relevant R&D activities. UU will pay each successful candidate up to GBP 5 000 for legal costs for participants to review and understand the contract terms before entering the lab.
