Manchester City Council is pleased to announce the first stage of an international design competition to select an urban design/ landscape architect led design team for the redevelopment of Piccadilly (an area historically referred to as Piccadilly Gardens) to create a world class public space.
Piccadilly is one of the most significant central Manchester locations and has an important history. However, Piccadilly was last redeveloped around 2000 during which time the sunken gardens, lawn and large areas of flower beds were removed to make way for the construction of a pavilion and free-standing wall (designed by Japanese Architect Tadao Ando) and installation of a new water feature and landscaping.
The area has been added to incrementally over time and has had to accommodate elements of additional transport infrastructure.
Piccadilly Gardens will provide an example of the very best in Manchester public realm to showcase and exemplify the city’s growing international status. It is one of the most significant central Manchester locations and has an important history.
