two.1.4) Short description

EQUANS on behalf of North East Lincolnshire is seeking a suitably qualified principal

contractor for the refurbishment of Corporation Bridge, which is a grade 2 listed structure.

Specialist contractors will be required who have the experience with working on historic

assets of this type

Due to the age of the structure it's materials, and the aggressive environment, many

elements of the structure are deteriorating.

• Widespread corrosion and section loss of the below deck metal elements including the

structural girders (both longitudinal and transverse), the bearings, and connecting elements

including the rivets.

• Particularly heavy corrosion and section loss to the first cross beam of the moving span,

due to water ingress from the adjacent joint. This includes 50% section loss to some

stiffeners.

• Damage and deterioration to the timber "Acme" deck panels and sealant to the lifting

section carriageway.

• Extensive failure of protective pain system below the deck level, and area failures of same

above the deck level

two.2.4) Description of the procurement

The proposed works will include the following :

Mechanical

Replace filler plates and protective casing to mechanical elements.

Free, scour, clean, and grease roller bearings.

Upgrade of electrical control system for the lifting mechanism.

Structural

Scour away corrosion to all elements, repair steel where needed by splicing in new metal,

replace corroded rivets. This may involve replacing the steel deck plates, depending on their

condition.

Remove invasive plant life and repair various cracked and damaged stone copings and

brickwork in abutments and wing walls. This may involve structural sheet piling works to

redistribute loading away from failing brick elements.

Replace deteriorating Acme carriageway panels and sealant.

Clear and upgrade inadequate superstructure drainage.

Bridge waterproof replacement.

Repair works to the substructure at each end of the bridge and the piers, supporting the

main structure.

Undertake conservation works to the Control Room.

Aesthetics

Remove failing / failed paint system (likely abrasive blasting), and repaint entire structure. It

is hoped that an improved paint system, such as a resinous paint system, will be used as the

primary protective system, potentially with an outer coat of traditional paint in order to

satisfy the listing. This would extend the lifespan of the refurbished structure and give a

greater return on investment.
