Network Rail owns a number of ballast cleaning systems, all purchased between 2004 and 2016; based on the life expectancy of the vehicles they will be due for replacement or overhaul during the next control period CP7 (The dates for CP7 are between 2024 – 2029). Thus, Network Rail is developing its strategy for the future of ballast recycling. In doing so, Network Rail is looking to engage with the international supply chain early to develop solutions that can lead to procurement activity expected to start in 2024.

Thus, Network Rail is developing its strategy for the future of ballast recycling. In doing so, Network Rail is looking to engage with the international supply chain early to develop solutions that can lead to procurement activity expected to start in 2024.

Network Rail will consider an upgrade to a current machine or purchase of a new machine as part of this strategy.

Presently, Network Rail owns the Ballast Cleaning Systems as well as operating and maintaining the assets. Network Rail hopes to explore the market and determine the optimum model for this service. As part of this Network Rail will consider both purchase or lease of future machines.
