The project will involve working with a Birmingham based artist from a Commonwealth diasporas as well as artists from 6 commonwealth countries, likely to include India, Pakistan, Rwanda, Uganda, & Trinidad and Tobago. The artists will be paid real living wage for 3 months to go about the normal practice with no expectation to make work. Their experiences will then be documented by a digital storyteller and this will be shared as online content throughout the course of the project culminating in a live sharing as part of the cultural programme in August 2022. For National Day, we would look to bring 1 artist from the UK and 1 artist from one of the Commonwealth Countries we are working with on the project to Dubai. They would work together to create a joint commission that would be performed at 2 or 3 moments during National Day. Beatfreeks will source artists from around the Commonwealth to be part of the Birmingham 2022 project. They will manage the selected performers over a number of months, educating and honing their skills, so they are able to produce a world class performance at UK National Day. During the life of the project, the artists will receive a living wage and a high-profile platform to showcase their skills. A Beatfreeks host will accompany the performers to Expo 2020 Dubai and introduce and host the performances.
