PAVA is classified as a prohibited weapon by virtue of Sec. 5 (1)(b) Firearms Act 1968 and is now the only spray used by police forces in the UK. UK Police Forces had traditionally used CS gas spray, but with the more widespread carriage of Tasers, PAVA has now entirely replaced its predecessor due to its non-flammable nature.
