Description
Enable the in active demonstration of 3D concrete printing technology capability at a reduced scale to undertake a defined task, specifically the manufacture of the MSSS box bund.
For practical reasons, the in active demonstration will be conducted at a slightly reduced scale to facilitate subsequent disposal. The objective of this stage is to test the feasibility of the technique under in active conditions.
The in active demonstration will involve 3DCP technology applied to the manufacture of MSSS waste container bunds, which are presently produced using traditional cast concrete methods. The proposed technique is anticipated to be significantly more efficient, cost effective, and flexible, enabling "just in time" manufacture and thereby eliminating the need for storage of empty boxes awaiting filling.

A LINC challenge was undertaken in 2023, CM3D were one of two organisations who submitted a proposal and CM3D were the awarded supplier. CM3D demonstrated a proven track record in this field with other regulated industries (water utilities) and a leading specialist, this was underpinned from acknowledged experts in this field. The other proposal was from a start up company, who had key individuals from the nuclear industry, but their technology was still in development and not yet proven in a regulated field.
The resulting work from the LINC challenge provided clear evidence that CM3D's technology is both viable and effective and can support this scaled down in active demonstration. in meeting the stated requirements of this award. On the basis of these outcomes, Sellafield Ltd is now positioned to progress to the next stage of work, which will focus on determining whether the solution can be delivered at the scale necessary to support operational deployment.
Subject to a successful in active demonstration, it is anticipated that the work will progress to a full-scale demonstration with further refinement of the methodology to ensure operational effectiveness and compliance with regulatory requirements, however, this would be subject to a separate procurement route compliant to PA23.
