Legislation came into effect stating that cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) awareness must be included in the minimum statutory content in Learning for Life and Work at Key Stage 3 as stated in Article 3 of Education (Northern Ireland) Order. It is a statutory learning outcome within the Personal Development strand of Learning for Life and Work at Key Stage 3 that all pupils should be able to ‘develop an awareness of emergency first aid procedures'. Learning outcomes require the demonstration of skills and application of knowledge and understanding. This is an important statutory link for proposals to introduce an expectation that schools will deliver CPR training to all pupils during Key Stage 3. Therefore, EA require CPR manikins and AED training units (and consumables) to be delivered to post primary schools throughout Northern Ireland.
