Cumberland council, as ‘relevant authority’ for coroner’s services in Cumbria is seeking suitable contractor(s) to enter a contract(s) for the ‘Removal of Bodies on behalf of the HM Coroners’ within the county of Cumbria.

As ‘relevant authority’ Cumberland Council has the statutory responsibility to provide appropriate, timely and robust arrangements for the collection and/or transportation of a deceased person when the death needs to be referred to hm coroner for investigation if the death occurred within the Cumbria Coroners area.

Lot 1: North Cumbria

Carlisle and the surrounding area, with boundaries are coterminous with what was the old ‘Carlisle City Council’ area.

The area approximately covers to the Scottish border to the North, and to the Northumberland border to the east. West to the Solway estuary and the village of Kirkbampton, and south to Dalston / Sebergham.

(Designated mortuary – CIC, Carlisle).

Included are the potential transfer / collection of cases between CIC in Carlisle, WCH in Whitehaven and RLI in Lancaster, or other hospitals as required by HM Coroner.

Penrith, Eden Valley, and the surrounding area, and Kendal and South-East Cumbria.

Area approximately covers Southwaite / Alston to the north, Patterdale and Glenridding to the west, Appleby / Brough / Kirkby Stephen / Sedbergh / Kirby Lonsdale to the east, and the A591 corridor covering Ambleside, Windermere, and Kendal. The south-east boundary of this Lot 2 is that of Lancashire and Yorkshire.

Included in this are any necessary transfer and collection of cases between FGH in Barrow and RLI in Lancaster.

The area approximately covers Millom / Haverigg to the south, then Whitehaven / Workington / Maryport / Silloth to the west or coastline. Including Cockermouth and Keswick to the east, and north to Burgh-by-Sands / Thursby / Caldbeck.

(Designated mortuary, subject to the place of death – WCH, Whitehaven and CIC, Carlisle).

Lot 4 will potentially include any necessary transfer and collections between WCH in Whitehaven, CIC in Carlisle and RLI in Lancaster.
