This is achieved through an accredited bespoke qualification at SCQF level 11 (post-graduate - equivalent to RQF level 7). Successfully attainment of the qualification is a contractual requirement of continued employment in HSE. The current contract is due to expire in March 2024.

HSE has recently published a new strategy which will lead to a new operating model. This is still under development and may lead to a restructure of the training programme and different qualification needs. Recruitment of B4 trainee inspectors and Specialist inspectors will continue during and beyond implementation of the new operating model.
