The Automatic Hydrocarbons Network is currently operated for the Environment Agency by the Network Contractors, which at the time of contract issue for this capital procurement is Ricardo Energy & Environment, although this may be subject to change. Presently the network constitutes four TD-GC-FID ozone precursor analysers . These instruments are used to measure 29 of the 31 VOCs listed in Annex X of the Air Quality Directive 2008/50/EC (AQD). Theses VOCs are known as Non-Methane Volatile Organic Compounds (NMVOCs).
The objective of these measurements as described in Annex X of the AQD:
- to analyse any trend in ozone precursors
- to check the efficiency of emission reduction strategies
- to check the consistency of emission inventories and
- to help attribute emission sources to observed pollution concentrations
