Section four. Procedure
four.1) Description
four.1.1) Type of procedure
Award of a contract without prior publication of a call for competition in the cases listed below
- The services can be provided only by a particular economic operator for the following reason:
- absence of competition for technical reasons
Explanation:
To ensure its success, it is essential that the DecodeME project undertakes genotyping of the 20,000 ME/CFS cohort using the Affymetrix Axiom® array, and this is only possible via ThermoFisher who is Affymetrix’s parent company. The reason is that the project is only well-powered if – for its UK gender-, age- and ancestry-matched control samples – it takes advantage of the 500,000-strong UK Biobank cohort. Specifically, the project needs the genotypes of its cases (people with ME/CFS) to have been acquired using the exact same array as the controls (UK Biobank) and these were acquired using exactly this technology, i.e. the Affymetrix Axiom® array. Otherwise – if a different array is used – there is potential that technical errors would introduce spurious findings which might lead us to arrive at false scientific conclusions.
