Description
SCiHPS III extension (Last Wednesday Club (LWC) and Bridging Module (exc. Student fees), SCiHPS IV Planning and Delivery (Appendix 1)
Delivery and extension of SCiHPS III (cohort), supporting avenues to higher qualification and
chartered status for the current cohort of practitioners. Chartered status for coaches is a key
component of the 2032 Coaching Strategy which UK Sport are leading on. Dr Muir
and Dr Gillott will continue to provide expertise and delivery to SCiHPS III through the
extension of the programme.
Proposal to run two further SCiHPS cohorts (IV & V), (V to be agreed) reaching and supporting more individuals across the LA cycle. The programme architecture, scheduling, and intervention strategies are predicated on a belief that practitioners' learning and development may be accelerated by frequent and varied opportunities to put ideas to work, access to timely feedback that can be used, and the introduction of supporting concepts and ideas when they are needed most. SCiHPS is designed around a work-related, integrated curriculum: the programme components integrate with each other, and the hands-on work of the coach development practitioner: the 'day-to-day' is learning and development when integrated in this way. The programme in its entirety ensures the practice of coaching and coach development remains the competitive advantage for the High-Performance System.
The vision of the Supporting Coaching in High-Performance Sport (SCiHPS) programme is to develop coach-development practitioners with the knowledge, skills, and experience to support World Class Coaching beyond the 2026 Milan-Cortina and LA 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
To deliver on this vison, SCiHPS aims to:
• create stimulating learning environments in which Coach Developers are exposed to a wide variety of high-performance coaching situations and contexts;
• accelerate the accrual of relevant field experiences;
• support the development of practical skills that have a direct effect on coaches' daily environments;
• co-create an effective coach development community to support those who are in - or are aspiring to - a full time Coach Developer role;
• align with professional standards and offer Coach Developers a route to Higher qualifications1 and Chartered Status
1. Fieldwork - Fieldwork will take place in the daily coaching environments of the programme participants. Working in small groups of 4-6, and supported by expert coach development practitioners, coaching observations will form the critical spine of the programme.
2. Supervision groups - Small-group supervision will take place online and will involve programme participants, with the help of a Supervisor, attending to their professional interactions, to themselves as a critical component in those interactions, and recognising the wider systemic context.
3. Tutorials and clinics - Online tutorials will bring the whole programme cohort together to share their learning and development experiences over the programme, reflect on fieldwork experiences together, and to seek and offer help with knowledge and skill development, developing a communal sense of 'good practice' in the various tasks they undertake in their work.
4. Seminars - Seminars are planned in-person events of two-days duration and will occur five times across the programme.
