A pre-disperser (a low resolution prism spectrometer) with an exit slit mask is used to define the bandpass within the LM band, acting as an order sorting filter for the echelle. Multiple exposures with rotation of the pre-disperser and main disperser are required to build up a continuous spectrum. The main dispersion optics for the METIS LMS consists of a three mirror system (the TMA) operating in double pass as collimator and camera. An immersed germanium grating is used as the main dispersing element. Performance of the spectrometer will be essentially diffraction limited and with good control of scattered light.
