In reviewing the Key Criteria, the following were considered to be the most important:- Value and service sustainability.
In addition to this, continuing with Poundbury gives the Trust continuity of service having built up an existing relationship between PHU Pathologists, clinicians and surgical teams. Poundbury Pathologists attend PHU MDT's when required and are therefore experienced with the Trust's surgical and clinical processes. Poundbury Pathologists participate in the national dermal EQA scheme which is an ISO15189 accreditation standard requirement
The provider was originally chosen by NHSE to provide post pandemic recovery Histopathology outsourcing support for breast screening and have further supported PHU with breast, skin, gynae, urology and GI reporting. The provider meets the basic selection criteria, in particular 'technical and professional ability' in that they offer specific technical expertise in Histopathology breast reporting and have established a relationship with PHU clinical teams so can discuss cases confidently at MDT, due to knowledge of PHU surgical and clinical processes. The PHU Cellular Pathology department now also have a deficit of reporting capacity for other tumour groups such as skin, gynae, upper and lower GI and Urology and have used this provider to support with further outsourcing, maintaining existing clinical relationships. The provider can offer Consultants registered with the relevant EQA schemes which is an important factor for patient safety and accreditation.
The provider is considered to give good value, with a bespoke PHU pricing structure negotiated based upon workload points. The contract does not state minimum activity levels therefore PHU are not committed to sending a certain amount of work and can use the service as and when required.
