The University intends to award this contract under the conditions of regulation 33.b (iii) of the Public Contracts (Scotland) regulations.
The University of Strathclyde’s Institute of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences seek to purchase an artificial intestinal system, to support research and development activities within the department.
The University requires a single suitably qualified supplier to provide a solution that meets the above requirement and non-exhaustive capabilities listed below:
The required equipment provides insight into the release, solubility and availability of ingested products as an alternative to animal and human studies.
be integrated to connect the stomach and small intestine and be able to replicate the bulk luminal macroenvironment in both regions;
include a separate system that replicates the colon, this apparatus should provide the bulk luminal conditions within the colon as well as mixing patterns that represent those found in vivo;
be controlled with feedback sensors to ensure that the conditions are dynamically controlled;
mimic body temperature and the peristaltic motility within the gastro-intestinal tract;
be validated in comparison with in vivo studies in humans.

Explanation:
Early market research and engagement undertaken by the University highlighted that the supplier the the University intends to award to manufactures the equipment to be procured for research environments such as the University's Pharmacy and Biomedical Science department. The department seek to purchase the aforementioned equipment as part of grant funding awarded by Engineering and Physical Science Council (ESPRC). The supplier the University intends to award to holds a variety of patents for the equipment to be purchased. By contracting with the supplier the University will be able to assure the funding source that the equipment will add specialist intellectual property to the University's research not readily available in the market.
