The NHS Long Term Plan published in July 2019 set out an ambitious programme of transformation across the NHS. It recognises that suicide prevention is a complex system-wide challenge which requires close working between the NHS, public health and partner organisations, tailoring evidence of what works to local need and determinants. The suicide reduction ambition sits within the context of other improvements to mental health services in the NHS Long Term Plan which will support preventing suicides, most notably: 24/7 crisis care for all ages available via 111; integrated community models for SMI which will include meeting needs for those who self-harm and with co-morbid substance use; and improving the therapeutic environment in inpatient settings

The current suicide prevention programme will cover every local area in the country.

All systems will have suicide bereavement support services providing timely and appropriate support to families and staff in place.
