Description

The UK Chinook and Merlin fleets are heavily committed to operations world-wide as well as contingent military tasks and continuation training. Both aircraft are fitted with the Pratt & Whitney Titan T62 which is a gas turbine engine used as an auxiliary power unit (generator) for several types of military helicopter as well as turboshaft main propulsion unit on light civilian helicopters. On military helicopters, once started the APU provides utility power generation (to provide emergency lighting, alignment of GPS/Inertial navigation etc) and hydraulic pressure (charging engine start accumulators and use of the ramp).  Once the first engine is started and rotors are turning, the APU generator is de-selected.  For emergencies, the APU can be started in flight to provide electrical power.  Prior to engine shut down the APU is restarted and runs until all utility electrics and hydraulics are no longer required.

The Chinook Delivery Team has to maintain appropriate arrangements to ensure platform availability and serviceability - to support a Forward Fleet of aircraft as well as to facilitate the timely completion of aircraft depth maintenance.

In line with the above, Chinook Delivery Team intends to direct award the contract for support to the Titan Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) for the for the T-62T-2B Chinook and T-62-40C7EH Merlin Helicopters to Pratt & Whitney under Schedule 5, Paragraph 6 of the Procurement Act 2023 (Technical Reasons).
