This framework Market Survey concerns the supply of complete normal conducting iron-dominated electro-magnets as well as components like yokes and coils for various magnet types for the existing and future CERN accelerator complex. The air or water-cooled magnets will be made of solid or laminated steel yokes, and of coils wound from solid or hollow copper conductor. They will have a mass ranging from a few kilograms up to several tens of tons.

The estimated value of the activity is 750k – 5M CHF

two.2.4) Description of the procurement

The Supply shall include the technical deliverables and activities specified in the relevant Invitation

to Tender, which may include:

• Preparation of a magnetic and/or mechanical design;

• Engineering design and preparation of a complete manufacturing file containing calculations,

production drawings, procedures, sub-contractors and the quality assurance plan;

• Procurement of all raw materials and sub-components (except those which are supplied by CERN);

• Preparation of the necessary tooling for manufacture, tests, assembly and transport;

• Yoke stacking and assembly;

• Coil winding;

• Lamination stamping;

• Impregnation;

• Magnet assembly;

• Component manufacturing;

• Conductor brazing;

• Welding;

• Supply of one or more pre-series units and, after CERN validation, of the series;

• Execution of all mechanical, electrical and thermal measurements and hydraulic tests to ensure compliance with CERN’s technical specifications;

• Magnetic measurements;

• Detailed technical documentation;

• The sealing, packing and transport to CERN.

The present framework Market Survey will be followed by several Invitations to Tenders exercises to qualified and selected firms (see Annex). Deliveries are currently foreseen over the next years, according to the schedule of the various projects.

CERN is funded by a consortium of global nations and also receives funds from EU sources. It is an NGO (Non-Governmental Organisation) and therefore is not directly subject to EU regulations. This contract is not expected to be bound to any specific EU rules.
