Severn Trent Water and Hafren Dyfrdwy (the Utilities) are seeking to publish a PIN notice and conduct a soft market testing exercise as permitted by regulations 58 and 59 of the Utilities Contracts Regulations 2016 to understand the opportunity to research and explore the use of low carbon, carbon-neutral, or carbon negative concrete in order to reduce embodied carbon. Concrete is commonly used throughout the utilities capital programme, which has a total budget of £2.5bn for 2020-2025.
The Utilities would like to further understand the use of accelerated carbon curing in conjunction with the potential use of cementitious replacements, either partial or complete. The Utilities are interested in technology/methods that can be retrofitted to our existing supply chain's concrete production sites.
Specification/Technical Requirements:
• Low carbon, carbon-negative or carbon-neutral
• Meets or exceeds strength in comparison to conventional concrete
• Meets or exceeds durability in comparison to conventional concrete
The Utilities would also like to understand the current uses of the concrete, any future potential uses that may be in development, alongside limitations of the material compared to conventional concrete.
If there are products currently in development that meets these requirements, we may be interested to understand the technologies and their respective timelines.
Thank you
