To support NHS England's mandate, NHS England (formerly Health Education England) has been commissioning expert organisations since 2014 to enable sixth form students from low socio-economic backgrounds across England to participate in Access to Medicine summer school programmes. The support begins in Year 11 and is continued until they graduate from university and enter employment.
NHS England is seeking a provider capable of delivering well-designed programmes of support that will result in increased access to medicine schools and increased knowledge and understanding of pathways through medical and dentistry schools including intercalation and opportunities to undertake research activities, greater access to a network of support, and increased confidence
The target is for 900 students to go through the Access to Medicine programme in 2024/5 and 2025/26, from locations across England including local authorities with higher rates of poverty and lower rates of progression to higher education.
