two.1.4) Short description

The UKEAP network consists of four rural air pollution monitoring networks and operation of two UK European Monitoring and Evaluation Programme (EMEP) Supersites. The four networks are the;

• Precipitation Network (Precip-Net) measuring rain composition across the UK;

• National Ammonia Monitoring Network (NAMN), measuring ammonia concentrations across the UK;

• Acid Gas and Aerosol Network (AGANet), measuring acid gas concentrations and inorganic aerosol (~PM4) composition; and

• NO2 - Net network, measuring indicative NO2 concentrations.

In addition to these networks the UNECE Convention on Long Range Transboundary Air Pollutants operates a number of measurement and monitoring programmes, including EMEP – the European Co-operative Programme for Monitoring and Evaluation of the Long-range Transmission of Air Pollutants in Europe. The UK contribution to the EMEP monitoring strategy is two Level II ‘Supersites’, one in the north of the UK at Auchencorth Moss, Midlothian, and one in the south, at Chilbolton, Hampshire. Data from these sites at hourly or daily frequency are supplemented by long-term integrating measurements from other monitoring networks across the UK to ensure effective operation of equipment. Within this contract the UK contribution to the EMEP Intensive experiments at these two sites includes:

• The provision of high resolution mercury, chemical composition of PM2.5, PM10

• Measurement of the chemical composition of PM2.5, PM10 and reactive gases.

• Daily wet only precipitation measurements of both acidifying and eutrophying chemical species

Data collation for the delivery of data to EMEP is undertaken in collaboration with the Defra Data Dissemination Unit (DDU) contract which provides the UK-Air website.
