The University Hospitals Birmingham is seeking to engage with suppliers interested in its upcoming requirement for the provision of an E-Portfolio Solution for Nurses.

The trust employs around 10,000 nurse practitioners and we are committed to investing in their development and wellbeing.

Currently, some nurses do not even have guaranteed access to a manual portfolio. This often puts them at a disadvantage when trying to move forward in their career. Those that do have paper portfolios, encounter administration difficulties. A UHB E Portfolio would enable nurses to have a single standardised system where they can record their achievements.

It would also help to standardise the support processes for the nurses, as all supervisors will be working to the same set of standards. This will really help to increase the recruitment and retention of nurses within the Trust.

It is therefore imperative our nursing staff have a system in place, where they can accumulate and record their continuous professional development. This has never been done before, and if anything it has been late in its commencement as a project. As can be seen, there is an inherent need. The Trust is also accelerating an international recruitment drive for nurses, and this E Portfolio will be an attractive feature to bring new staff forward to UHB Trust.

With the busy shifts nurses run throughout the week, the aim of the E Portfolio is to provide them with a tool that they can use to track their career pathway, record revalidations and their aims in the future. It is to be created for them, to be used by them and occasionally by their supervisors.

Research has been done into the demand for this project across the nursing team, their managers and the education team. The feedback has been nothing short of positive. This can really make a more organised system and we can begin to move away from manual records. It will change things for the good.

An E Portfolio will also increase patient satisfaction, simply because nurses can see where they are lacking and have this flagged up. Furthermore, they can use it when it comes to appraisals and present it to their supervisor. This can all be done remotely to save a huge amount of time, as well as cost for the Trust. It can be accessible from any internet connection, thus allowing nurses and supervisors to actually give their attention to providing excellent patient care. Other healthcare professionals such as middle level doctors and some allied health professions have been using them for some time now. Going digital is an inevitability, and a real need. The E Portfolio will be nurse centred, and will allow them to carry their career development physically anywhere they go.

Furthermore, they will be able to prove their competencies via a variety of methods by uploading recordings, certificates and letters from patients alongside the traditional material.

Suppliers who are able to offer solutions relevant to this requirement are invited to express an interest and respond to a market engagement questionnaire. Further details on how to do this are contained within the additional information section of this notice.

This exercise is intended to provide potential bidders with the opportunity to review the Authority's Briefing Document and to provide information regarding the services they can offer that could meet these outline requirements. This builds on the Authority's commitment to engage with the market, by sharing information and seeking input from the market to enable us to develop the final specification and determine the appropriate route to market in a fair and transparent manner.
