National Gas Transmission owns and operates Britain's National Transmission System (NTS), a nationwide network that transports gas from entry points to power stations, industry, storage facilities, gas distribution networks serving homes and businesses, and international interconnectors. The NTS includes around 5,000 miles of pipeline, over 60 compressors across 21 stations, and more than 500 aboveground installations. It plays a vital role in maintaining security of supply, safely and reliably delivering up to three times the energy carried by the electricity grid each year.
Looking ahead, National Gas Transmission is developing the hydrogen transmission system of the future, enabling low carbon hydrogen and carbon dioxide transport for carbon capture and storage, supporting the UK's net zero ambitions.
In January 2025, National Gas completed its divestment from National Grid, delivering a major transformation programme that fully separated IT systems, data, networks, processes, and operational services to establish National Gas as an independent organisation.
As part of its next phase, National Gas is looking to review the market for Change and Delivery services across its core systems and applications. This proposed framework will support the continuous enhancement, evolution, and technical optimisation of the National Gas technology estate, ensuring it remains resilient, efficient, and fit for purpose as a regulated Critical National Infrastructure operator.
