Engagement process description
His Majesty's Government (HMG) has identified the life sciences as one of eight crucial growth-driving sectors for the UK economy. The life sciences are undergoing a scientific and technological revolution, and the UK is well placed to lead this new era of biomedical science. To this end, HMG has been developing an ambitious and targeted sector plan for the life sciences to build on these strengths and improve healthcare in the UK. To support HMG's broad strategic goals for the life sciences, the Department of Health & Social Care (DHSC) is conducting this market engagement to better understand the capacity and technical capabilities of the UK biobanking market - covering both the storage and processing of biological samples ("bio-samples"). The purpose of this engagement is to gather information on the UK biobanking market's: • current capacity for bio-sample storage and processing, • technical capabilities for storage and processing, • existing investment plans, and • timescales for potential expansion. All respondents will be asked to complete a questionnaire covering these topics. This can be downloaded from the link here: https://atamis-1928.my.salesforce-sites.com/sfsites/c/sfc/servlet.shepherd/document/download/069Sr00000KQrV7IAL, or accessed via the Atamis portal here: https://atamis-1928.my.salesforce-sites.com/ProSpend__CS_ContractPage?SearchType=Projects&uid=a07Sr00000UgKGTIA3&searchStr=biobank&sortStr=Recently+Published&page=1&filters=&County=. Please download the questionnaire attached and reupload your completed response when you submit through Atamis. (If you wish, you can submit additional documents as part of your response; but completing the questionnaire is the only requirement.) All the information submitted will remain confidential. Once the engagement has closed, DHSC will publish a summary of findings on the Atamis portal. This may include some high-level, aggregated figures, provided that doing so will not impact the confidentiality of any information submitted. If necessary, DHSC may contact respondents to clarify information in their response. This may take the form of a follow-up meeting during or after the engagement. Please respond to this engagement if you supply, or have the ability to supply, bio-sample storage and/or processing (either now or within the next five years). No other respondents are eligible. There is no planned procurement activity relating to this engagement. For the avoidance of doubt, the purpose of the current exercise is solely to inform broad strategic planning. Since this is neither a call for competition nor a procurement, it's been assigned a nominal monetary value of £1. The deadline for responses is Wednesday, 21 May 2025. If you have any questions, please contact biobankengagement@dhsc.gov.uk.
