From April 1st, 2025, the Trust was awarded the contracts to deliver Paediatric Exodontia Services and Adult and Paediatric Special Care dentistry in Wirral.
The purpose of paediatric exodontia and special care dentistry is to provide specialist oral healthcare for adults and children from birth to adolescence whose needs cannot be managed by their general dental practice (GDP).
This includes adults, children and young people (CYP):
• with extensive oral disease,
• whose oral health care is complicated by intellectual, medical, physical, social, psychological and/or emotional factors/disability.
• with developmental disorders of the teeth and mouth.
• who are either too anxious or too young to accept routine dental treatment
Dental treatment under general anaesthetic (DGA) is an essential adjunct to providing care where the surgical intervention is complex or to those adults and children who are cognitively immature, highly anxious or who have a medical condition where general anaesthesia is the most appropriate or only way to deliver dental treatment. In order to meet NHSEI IPC guidance the service must be delivered in a theatre with appropriate ventilation.
To deliver this in Wirral, the Trust has subcontracted Wirral University Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust to provide facilities and staffing at Arrowe Park to support DGA. Informal arrangements have been in place for many years however an NHS standard subcontract was put in place in 2022/23 which was extended to 2024/25.
The Trust intends to award a contract an existing provider following direct award process C
The intention is that the contract will run from 1st April 2025 to 31st March 2026 at the cost of £310K with the potential to extend for a further 12 months.
