The Soft X-ray Imager (SXI) Instrument is intended for use on the joint European Space Agency (ESA) and Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) mission Solar Wind Magnetosphere Ionosphere Link Explorer (SMILE) to study the interaction of the solar wind with the Earth’s magnetosphere and ionosphere. University of Leicester (UL) is the Principal Investigator (PI) institution of SXI. The SXI Instrument is one of four Instruments on the Spacecraft (S/C). SMILE will monitor the interaction of the Earth’s magnetosphere and ionosphere with the solar wind. The mission science is intended to assist the understanding of the structures and dynamics of the magnetosphere and ionosphere on a global scale. The SMILE payload consists of the SXI, Ultraviolet Imager (UVI), Light Ion Analyser (LIA) and Magnetometer (MAG) Instruments. The SXI Instrument comprises three units: Telescope, Front End Electronics (FEE) and Back End Electronics Box (EBOX), plus inter-connecting unit Harness. As part of the instrument Proto-Flight Model (PFM) acceptance test campaign, the SXI instrument needs to undergo thermal balance and thermal cycling acceptance testing to demonstrate compliance with instrument thermal performance requirements. This tender exercise covers the provision of these tests, including supply of facilities and performance of the test in conjunction with instrument operatives from the University of Leicester.
