Description

Carers are people who look after a relative or friend who otherwise couldn't manage without their help because of their health and care needs. The care they provide is unpaid and as such this definition does not extend to people who provide care professionally or through a voluntary organisation.

Unpaid carers can be broadly grouped into three categories although it is possible that a carer may span more than one category, for example a parent caring for a disabled child may also be caring for an elderly relative:

• Young carers are carers aged under 18 and are providing or intending to provide care and/or support to a family member or friend of any age

• Parent carers are adults aged 18 and over who are caring for a disabled child

• Adult carers are adults aged 18 and over who are providing or intending to provide care and/or support to another adult aged 18 and over

The proposal for the new contract for Information, Advice and Support for Unpaid Adult and Parent Carers in Leeds is for funding to remain at the level of £1,377,483 per annum.
