Hand and upper limb transplantation is possible following cadaveric donation. The surgery involved is extremely complex and recipients have, as with other cadaveric transplants, to take immunosuppressive drugs for life to prevent the transplanted organ being rejected. This service provides assessment, transplantation and follow-up. This is a very complex service to deliver - both from a patient assessment point of view and from a technical surgery point of view (the 10-hour operation requires eight plastic surgeons, one for each donor limb and one for each donor stump).
An award has been made following Direct Award Process A.
The lifetime value of the contract is £1,706,000.00 .
The contract start date is 1st April 2024 for a period of 3 years with an option to extend for a further 2 years.
