Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) provides access to highly specialist testing and clinical advice for clinicians and patients with suspected or diagnosed forms of CJD. The service is for patients across England and the devolved nations.
NHSE assumed commissioning and funding responsibility for the service on 1 April 2025 from the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC). The diagnostics/clinical advice service is currently provided by the University of Edinburgh. Surveillance is now led by the public health systems in each nation independently, but data is collated and reported collectively on behalf of the UK by UKHSA.
This is an contract award notice to inform the market of the urgent award under the Health Care Services Provider Selection Regime Regulations 2023 (PSR), regulation 14 to University of Edinburgh. For the avoidance of doubt, the provisions of the Public Contracts Regulations 2015 do not apply to this award.
The contract length is from 1st April 2025 to 30th September 2026. The urgent award has been made to preserve continued access to diagnostic testing, post-mortem neuropathology and expert
clinical advice. To note that the clinical advice element is until 31st March 2026.
This will also allow sufficient time to undertake a review to determine the future service requirements for Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD) service provision followed by a procurement process under PSR.
