This is an opportunity to bid to deliver the National Poetry Recitation Competition (NPRC) for primary and secondary schools in England in the academic years 2022/23, 2023/24 and 2024/25.
Poetry forms an important part of the National Curriculum for English at all key stages, as well as the specifications for English Literature GCSE and A-Level English Literature. The Government wants to encourage schools to improve pupils’ knowledge and enjoyment of poetry as part of a structured, knowledge-rich curriculum. The competition will develop and support inspiring poetry teaching in schools and motivate pupils and teachers to explore our rich literary heritage.
The supplier will curate an interactive, online anthology of poems, with accompanying information and context, covering 1,000 years of poetry and representing the best of our literacy heritage. Pupils in Key Stages 2, 3, 4 and 5 select poems from the online anthology and recite these in school-based competitions. Schools then submit entries to be judged by an expert panel, and from these submissions finalists from each Key Stage are identified and invited to perform at regional finals and a national final.
The successful bidder will also produce resources and deliver continuing professional development (CPD) for teachers to support the wider teaching of poetry, with the aim of improving teacher knowledge and confidence in the teaching of poetry.
Increasing opportunities to benefit from cultural capital, through a knowledge-rich curriculum, is particularly important for students from disadvantaged backgrounds. The supplier should encourage and facilitate the registration and participation of schools in the competition, particularly state schools with high levels of pupils receiving pupil-premium funding and free school meals.
The successful bidder should also demonstrate how they would make the finals events cultural experiences for all pupils involved, for example by inviting well known poets to give readings.
The estimated contract value in this notice includes the options to extend for up to 2 additional years on an annual basis. The initial contract will be for 1 year at a a maximum estimated value of £525,348. All extensions will be subject to supplier performance and internal approvals in the Department. Please review the suite of documents for further information.
