Within Birmingham and Solihull CCG there are currently two wheelchair services in operation, the Birmingham Wheelchair Service (BWS) and the Solihull WHeelchair Service (SWS). Birmingham and Solihull CCG intend to re-procure the Solihull Wheelchair Service as the current provider has handed in their notice. A replacement service therefore needs to be in place and fully operational before April 2022.
In 2019/20, Solihull Wheelchair Service records indicated 5200 registered service users. There were around 709 new referrals and 363 re-referrals per annum. As of 26th May 2021, there were 241 open episodes of care. The service is currently provided from the Better Living Centre, service users' homes or school, hospice or hospital settings. It is anticipated that the Better Living Centre will not be available to the newly appointed provider, so new premises will need to be sought for the service going forward.
