Network Rail (NR) owns, operates and maintains the UK Rail Infrastructure. Following a derailment at Eastleigh in 2020, NR’s Technical Authority has identified a need for a novel measurement device to record and report dynamic track gauge (the distance between two rails).

two.2.4) Description of the procurement

The desired end state is a solution or solutions that provide adequate early warning of lateral rail movement under traffic. If successful, the product could be deployed on S&C assets and on plainline, where the existing dynamic gauge monitoring system do not provide coverage (e.g. very low category routes, sidings, station areas). These areas are typically inspected manually using gauge recording trolleys, and visual / tactile inspections to identify failed components.
