The NHS-Galleri test is currently being assessed by the NHS as part of a large-scale clinical trial, the NHS-Galleri study (Neal, R. et al., 2022). This test has been shown in studies to be effective at finding cancers that are typically difficult to identify early, such as head and neck, bowel, lung, ovarian and pancreatic cancers (Liu, MC. et al., 2020). By assessing the Galleri test at a population scale, the NHS has the opportunity to better understand the performance of this test that can detect a cancer signal across more than 50 types of cancer before symptoms appear.
The NHS-Galleri test could help meet the NHS Long Term Plan goal of increasing the proportion of cancers caught early, which can be the key to reducing cancer mortality. Patients whose condition is diagnosed at ‘stage one’ typically have between 5 and 10 times the chance of surviving compared with those found at ‘stage four’
Given early results from the NHS-Galleri trial have been positive, NHS England have agreed to purchase 1,000,000 Galleri® tests over 2 years that will be offered to asymptomatic participants aged 50-77 years old in Cancer Alliances not involved in the NHS Galleri trial. It is proposed that invitations are set out to eligible participants from July 2024. The East of England South Cancer Alliance were not involved in the clinical trial and, therefore, have been selected to deliver the next phase of the programme by NHSE, the NHS-Galleri Interim Implementation Pilot.
