two.1.4) Short description

Together with NHS Barnsley CCG, the Council are developing a new model for intermediate care to be implemented from 1 June 2021. As part of the new model, this procurement is for accommodation and hotel type services for a 30 bedded unit in Barnsley and follows a soft market test carried out in September 2020.

Intermediate care is something that involves all health and social care organisations working in Barnsley and is a key part of supporting patients as they go into and come out of hospital to make sure that patients receive the right care, at the right time, in the right place.

Intermediate care services provide support for a short time to help patients recover and increase their independence aiming to support people to:

• Remain at home when they start to find things more difficult

• Recover after a fall, an acute illness or an operation

• Reduce the risk of admission

• Decrease the length of a hospital stay

• Reduce the risk of a readmission

• Reduce the risk of admission to a care home.

The vision is that intermediate care in Barnsley will have a strengthened ‘home first’ offer. The successful Provider will provide 30 beds at one unit on a hotel type basis to facilitate intermediate care and emergency short stay care services for the residents of Barnsley. The unit would be staffed by NHS nurses and therapists and would become a specialist rehabilitation unit.
