Section six. Complementary information

six.3) Additional information

National Grid Electricity Transmission (ET) own and maintain the high voltage electricity network in England and Wales comprising 4,500 miles of overhead line, 900 miles of underground cable and more than 300 substations.

Our cables and substations are at the centre of the energy system. Every time a phone is plugged in or switch is turned on, we've played a part, connecting homes and business to the electricity they need. It's a crucial role and pivotal in turning the UK's net zero ambitions into reality.

We're leading by example by offering practical solutions, delivering the infrastructure needed to support increasing amounts of renewable energy and facilitate a nationwide rollout of electric vehicle charging points - all at the same time as delivering work sustainably and cutting our own emissions too. We deliver for customers efficiently, ensuring safe, reliable and affordable electricity around the clock no matter what the weather.

We're striving to meet those commitments by driving operational excellence whilst contributing positively to the communities in which we operate. To underpin our operational excellence journey, we need to transform our Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) system to accommodate changes including the adoption of predictive maintenance activities, increased digitalisation of business processes and the optimisation of work management.

The support for our existing EAM system is due for renewal in 2025, at which point it will also be nearing its end of life. This confluence of events presented an opportunity to reassess the market to address our priorities.

The new solution and architecture must align to our ambition whilst being a good functional fit with broader National Grid systems for HR, Procurement and Finance.

The current Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) application manages the:

a) Registry of the transmission assets.

b) Maintenance and other work associated with those assets.

c) Inventory relationship for MRO (Maintenance, Repair and Operations).

d) Scheduling of MRO activities.

e) Faults and defect management.

f) Asset condition and performance data.

g) Cost and time information across capital and maintenance work.

h) Wayleave information.

i) Field worker's timesheets and feeds into the SAP payroll system.

At present, this system supports up to 600 concurrent users across the ET business including both the 2,000 fieldworkers and their office-based support teams. In future, 3rd party contractors will also need to be added to this community.

In the coming years our system will experience added complexity arising from the investment required to achieve Net Zero. To ensure we are prepared a range of options for the provision of asset registry, work and asset management capabilities have been identified, and detailed analysis, including Cost Benefit Analysis (CBA) undertaken throughout 2022.

This has determined that a like-for-like replacement of our existing EAM system will not meet the future needs of our business. This will require new technologies such as:

• Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML).

• Digitally enabled workers.

• Digital twins.

• Advanced data analytics.

• Digital turnaround solutions.

• Real-time visualisation and alerts.

• Predictive analysis.

• The integration and automation of systems and processes - Robotic Process Automation (RPA).

The preferred solution is to replace the current EAM system with IBM Maximo. Maximo is a market leading work and asset management solution that meets the requirements outlined above and is seen to have the capabilities to support ET's strategic ambitions and maintaining safe, reliable and affordable service to our customer.
