two.1) Scope of the procurement

two.1.1) Title

Net Zero 2030 - Biomethane Upgrading

two.1.2) Main CPV code

  • 90513800 - Sludge treatment services

two.1.3) Type of contract

Services

two.1.4) Short description

Anglian Water Services Ltd (AWS) produces over 150,000 dry tonnes of raw wastewater derived sludge per annum, this is treated at 10 regional sludge treatment centres (STC). We treat the sludge using advanced anaerobic digestion technologies and biogas is produced which we currently use as a renewable fuel in combined heat & power (CHP) engines. To support our net zero 2030 plans our intention is to transition our CHP fleet over to biogas upgrading to biomethane for grid injection or other beneficial use.

Our base plan is to switch our sites at Cottonvalley (Milton Keynes), Gt Billing (Northampton) & Whitlingham (Norwich) to biomethane and would consider the option to accelerate our transition across our other STC sites.

For further information on Bioresources and our Net Zero plans please refer to our published information hosted on our website https://www.anglianwater.co.uk/about-us/who-we-are/our-suppliers/doing-business-with-others/

2. Great Billing STC (Northampton)

3. Whitlingham STC (Norwich)

Other sites we would consider accelerating transition from CHP

Basildon STC

Chelmsford STC

Cliff Quay STC (Ipswich)

Colchester STC

King's Lynn STC

Pyewipe STC (Grimsby)

Anglian Water are also progressing plans to build a new STC for Cambridge as part of our Cambridge WRC relocation project, the proposed solution for the new STC also includes plans for biomethane upgrading to grid.

Full details of the capacity sludge treatment capacity for these sites can be found on our website in our published bioresources markets information data tables.

two.2.4) Description of the procurement

Provision of the end to end service for the upgrading of raw biogas to biomethane. This shall include full engineering, procurement and construction of, but not be limited too;

Gas clean-up

Biomethane upgrading equipment

Grid injection or compression equipment where option is transfer to a remote receiving station or alternate use (e.g use as a Bio-CNG fuel)

Pipeline & connection to grid

(possible CO2 capture and recovery)

(possible wider renewable energy integration, e.g. heat pumps for process heating, solar etc to maximise renewable energy benefits from our STC operations)

At this stage we remain open to the commercial models from traditions design, build (AWS operate) through to design, build, operate and design, build, finance, operate models.

However, we must be clear that in support of our net zero strategy, the carbon benefits associated with the biomethane produced must be fully retained by AWS.
