HSE S&RC has hand on experience of handling LH2 trailers from two previous research campaigns. Details of previous work and the overarching reason for this requirement is listed below. Following expressions of interest, further information regarding the projects, the end customers and the nature of the experiments can be shared.
In general terms these tests are a key part of the aviation sectors decarbonisation strategy and this research is being performing for a global leader in this area. We are interested in a permanent facility in the near future, however, securing funding for such a thing requires grant funding for organisations such as ourselves. We have a successful recent history of receiving LH2 deliveries from BOC and Air Liquide who have supported pre-normative work, which is being used to understand the hazards/phenomena and inform best practice. Explanation:
HSE had previously sought to procure several deliveries of liquid hydrogen via a Prior Information Notice. The Liquid Hydrogen was needed for the autumn of 2023. A quantity of approximately 2.5 tonnes would be required for each delivery.
HSE does not have any existing storage facility for LH2 and has previously relied on the rental of the supply trailer units. HSE was looking for a similar arrangement, aiming to retain the supply for a period of two weeks after each delivery to connect to HSE's equipment.
A handover/training session would be needed upon delivery. Information on the outlet and vent connections would also be needed.
HSE received a number of options but consider Air Liquide to be the most economically advantageous option. Air Liquide could meet our needs as outlined within the PIN and was the most cost effective option.
