London Luton Airport is located within the Borough boundary and opened in 1938, owned by the Council and operated by London Luton Airport Operations Ltd (LLAOL). It is now one of the largest employers in the area. Carrying over 16.5 million passengers in 2018, it is the fifth largest airport in the Country.
As the Local Planning Authority the Council is statutorily required to consider all planning matters relevant to the Airport. The detailed and technical planning matters that arise from its existence and operation require specialist aviation and planning consideration which the Council does not currently have “in-house”.
