The Environment Agency (EA) and Natural Resources Wales (NRW) operate a large number of monitoring
sites throughout England and Wales. The EA operate six telemetry systems based on old regional
boundaries. The management of these systems is via a national service consisting of three telemetry hubs
each supporting two systems. The management and maintenance of field equipment is carried out in
fourteen area based teams. The EA is in the process of adopting the use of DNP3, WITs DNP3 protocols
and IP packet switched data communications to field telemetry outstations. NRW operate in a similar
manner to the EA, and wish to adapt the use of IP packet switched communication in the future.
