Both central government and the NHS are increasingly recognising employment as an important route for people with mental illness to experience recovery and improved wellbeing. Employment of people in contact with secondary mental health services is a key indicator under the NHS and Adult Social Care Outcomes framework.

Helping people find good jobs and stay in work is one of the key actions that ICS such as ours can deliver to ensure the best outcomes for our communities, while at the same time making the most effective use of resources. Tackling health-related worklessness can contribute in reducing health inequalities in local populations.

The ICB is commissioning the IPS service to deploy specialists into community mental health teams and other secondary mental health services. The aim of this service is to deliver an integrated, evidence-based, supported employment service for people with mental health issues, based in secondary mental health teams.
