The internship programme links to the Health Education England (HEE) Research and Innovation Strategy and Clinical Academic Careers Framework. The content of this programme aims to provide the foundational knowledge and skills required to enable Interns to progress confidently to undertake further applied research training. In addition to attendance at an HEE designated university for taught elements of the programme, Interns will also identify and access a suitable clinical academic learning environment (other than their own place of normal practice) within which to focus their internship with the aim of acquiring expert clinical academic supervision and exposure/access to best practice and applied research expertise.

The HEE pre-doctoral bridging programme aims to encourage aspiring nurses, midwives, allied health professionals and other non-medical and non-dental healthcare professionals to develop clinical academic research careers. Pre-doctoral bridging fellowships provide tailored academic supervision and postgraduate research education to eligible non-medical and non-dental healthcare professionals to progress their clinical academic careers, and develop high quality, competitive applications for funded doctoral programmes (such as HEE/NIHR clinical doctoral research fellowships and the NIHR PCAF).
