Fife College have secured funding from the Edinburgh and South East Scotland City deal and through the Housing Construction Infrastructure. HCI and partners were keen for the colleges to deliver a Waste in the Circular Economy 40 hour unit of learning to 100 full time students per year.

The HCI Skills Gateway is an eight-year, 6 million GBP programme as part of the Edinburgh & South East Scotland City Region Deal based at Edinburgh Napier University. Its ambition is to deliver clear, integrated and inclusive progression routes into construction careers. This encompasses all skill levels, from introducing basic skills in schools across South-East Scotland, through to providing advanced postgraduate training for people under-represented in senior roles in the construction industry. Working in partnership across the public and private sector – uniting FE and HE training providers, construction industry companies and local and national government – the HCI Skills Gateway will help drive high value and inclusive growth to improve housing, lives and wellbeing across the Edinburgh and South-East Scotland region.

The HCI Skills Gateway is closely aligned with priorities within the Scottish Construction Leadership Forum’s August 2020 draft recovery plan: Skills and Workforce – support employment, fairness of work and those who may become unemployed through what will be a difficult period. A particular focus is needed on the younger workforce. Develop and embed an industry wide approach to school engagement and career promotion, including resources that showcase pathways into and through the industry across all professions. Develop a competency framework that includes a focus on digital skills, meta-skills, management and leadership skills in addition to technical skills and competencies.

Fife College have also decided to advertise the Waste in the Circular Economy as part of our Skills boost offerings and are also targeting 50 – 100 individuals who have been made redundant or have been furloughed during this current pandemic. This initiative will help boost the region’s economic recovery and should allow the individuals who have enrolled to progress onto further study and/or seek alternative employment in the STEM, renewables, engineering and construction sectors.
