NHS Nottingham and Nottinghamshire Integrated Care Board (ICB) are seeking to commission a Community Ophthalmology Service. This notice intends to identify providers who would like to express an interest in providing the above service and to invite all interested parties to attend a Market Engagement Event with NHS Nottingham and Nottinghamshire ICB.
NNICB, which covers four Place Based Partnerships (PBPs) Nottingham City, South Nottinghamshire, Mid Nottinghamshire and Bassetlaw, is looking to develop their existing community ophthalmology services in order to maximize the opportunity to prevent unnecessary referrals to secondary care and facilitate the discharge of patients from secondary care to community monitoring and management where appropriate. The community ophthalmology service will provide community based assessment, management and treatment.
The Community Ophthalmology Service will comprise of the following elements:
• Clinical triage of referrals from optometrists and GP’s.
• Community Assessment and Treatment (delivered by optometrists with enhanced qualifications) including Minor Eye Conditions, Glaucoma Referral Refinement, Glaucoma/Ocular Hypertension (Assessment, Management and Monitoring) including the transfer of stable patients from acute and independent sector providers.
• Cataract Post-operative care.
• Community Low Vision Aid Service (including the provision of Low Vision Aids).

Once registered, providers will have the option to give feedback about the draft Service Specification and also have the opportunity to provide comments on any perceived issues or challenges. The deadline for providing this feedback is 12pm on the 28th January 2026. Please note, this is a draft Service Specification which may be subject to changes.
Bidders who have expressed an interest in this soft market testing exercise will have the opportunity to submit a separate response to the invitation to tender (ITT) once published. Please note this is a market testing exercise and does not commit the ICB to carry out a procurement process.
