Explanation:

This is a Voluntary Ex Ante Transparency (VEAT) notice to alert the market of the University of Manchester intention to award a contract. Please note: an award has not been made for this requirement. The University of Manchester will incorporate a standstill period of 10 calendar days. The essential components of confocal microscopy in viable cells is optical quality which impacts resolution and sensitivity. As the majority of our cells do not experience visible light the act of imaging using high intensity lasers is an artificial environment and detrimental to cell health (heating effects, DNA damage etc.). The feature of this system revolves around the increased resolution and sensitivity offered by the new line of Olympus objective lenses. As a consequence, laser power for illumination is reduced, light based biological damage reduced thus extending the timeframe for the research question. As much of this work will be detection of low light signals in live cell samples this is essential. The specialist range of objective lens that are suitable for both single cell and thicker tissues e.g. organoid and spheroids. These are the critical aspects of the Olympus system that will make the intended research possible.

To improve detection the system will be enclosed in an opaque environmental chamber so that the light from accompanying electronics with LEDs will be nullified.
