Explanation:
The University is a partner in the 5G Centre for Scotland (“the Centre”). The Centre is currently engaged in two 5G R&D projects which require it to build 5G test networks which will be used for evaluation and research. The Centre aims to do so by building upon existing test networks with the purchase of further Remote Radio Heads (RRHs).
The existing networks are based on AW2S RRHs operating in conjunction with other network components – in particular the Baseband Processing Units (BBUs) and their associated 5G software stacks.
The Centre will build upon the existing components to expand and enhance our existing 5G testbeds for new projects, and require to maintain compatibility amongst the existing components in order to ensure that the networks function properly as a whole.
More specifically, the communication interface protocols implemented in the firmware on the RRHs and in the software stacks in the BBUs have been integrated and tested by the AW2S for functionality and compliance. In adopting different RRHs, we would encounter inter-operability problems resulting from differences in the interface implementations, which, where these could resolved, would inevitably require significant development and integration effort which is not feasible or practicable within the scope of these projects.
